Earning the 21st Century Scholarship provides students up to four years of undergraduate tuition* at any participating public college or university in Indiana. If you attend a private college, the state will award an amount comparable to that of a four-year public college. If you attend a participating proprietary (for-profit) school, the state will award a tuition scholarship equal to that of Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana.

*The scholarship amount may be reduced depending on the availability of funds and the availability of the student’s family to contribute to college.

As a 21st Century Scholar, not only do you earn a scholarship, you get step-by-step help to make sure you succeed in college. Plus, once you get to college, 21st Century Scholars receive support to finish their degrees.

The Scholar Success Program includes activities that will help you stay on track for college and career success. Each grade level has three activities to complete. Scholars can complete the specific steps for their grade level and track their progress using ScholarTrack.
Here, you can see all 12 requirements Scholars must complete during high school to receive their 21st Century Scholarship.

Perform Academically

All Scholars must earn a cumulative (overall) high school grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale. Strive to do your best in every class to make sure you stay on track to succeed. Remember, the higher your GPA, the more college choices you’ll have. Good grades can also earn you other scholarships that will pay for college costs not covered by your 21st Century Scholarship (such as books and living expenses).

Complete the Scholar Success Program

The Scholar Success Program ensures students complete specific steps that keep them on track for college and career success. Each grade level has requirements to guide students in planning their path to high school graduation and beyond—developing the skills needed to be college-ready and understanding what it takes to pay for college and graduate with minimal debt.

Graduate with a High School Diploma

Always strive for the highest-level diploma you think you can earn—don’t be afraid to push yourself! Colleges look for students who complete challenging courses and commit to earning a more rigorous high school diploma. Scholars must earn at least a Core 40 diploma, so if you opt to receive a general diploma, you will not qualify for the scholarship. Learn more about the diplomas Scholars can earn below.

Indiana’s Core 40 diploma is the academic foundation all students need to succeed in college, apprenticeship programs, military training and the workforce. Core 40 gives you more options — and more opportunities — to find a career with a real future. Learn the requirements for a Core 40 diploma here.
Some four-year Indiana colleges – including IU Bloomington and Purdue West Lafayette – require the Core 40 with Academic Honors. With this diploma, you’ll be eligible for more financial aid from the State of Indiana. Plus, some Indiana colleges offer scholarships just for students who have earned this diploma. Learn the requirements for a Core 40 diploma with Academic Honors here.
Some technical programs and apprenticeships require the Core 40 with Technical Honors. The Core 40 with Technical Honors opens the door to more state financial aid while making you more competitive for apprenticeships or college. Learn the requirements for a Core 40 diploma with Technical Honors here.
The International Baccalaureate program, available at some high schools, is designed to prepare you intellectually, personally, emotionally and socially to live in a rapidly globalizing world. You can choose courses in languages, business and more. Learn the requirements for an International Baccalaureate diploma here.

Take the Pledge

I pledge to graduate with a minimum of a Core 40 diploma from a state-accredited Indiana high school. I will complete the Scholar Success Program that helps me stay on track for college and career success. I will achieve a cumulative high school GPA of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale. I will not use illegal drugs or alcohol or commit a crime or delinquent act. I will apply for admission to an eligible Indiana college my senior year and apply on time for student financial aid.  As a college student I will complete at least 30 credit hours each year to stay on track toward earning my degree on time.  I aim to succeed.

* Plan should be updated annually to keep students on track for high school graduation and college admission.
** Includes job shadowing, internship, part-time employment, interviewing a professional or related experience linked to a student’s career aspirations.
*** Includes any additional scholarship opportunities beyond the 21st Century Scholarship.
